Healthier Desserts
CAT CORA

I love dessert, but don’t always love what they do to my hips.  I indulge once in a while with sweets, but I have learned to create healthier dessert dishes that still taste like the original sin. My secret to creating healthier desserts is to substitute lighter ingredients like yogurts, light puddings, soy or light ice creams and baked fruits with lots of spice. These are great ways to add mouthwatering flavor without adding to your waistline. If you are a chocolate lover, try shaving chocolate or a quick drizzle to satisfy your chocolate wanderlust.

Parfaits, affogatos, tarts and just good ol' ice cream make delicious light desserts.  One of my favorite everyday desserts is a simple ice cream cone with soy or light ice cream.  A smaller portion controlled serving can still satisfy your sweet craving without overdoing it.

Parfaits are also a good way to layer fruit, nuts and yogurt for a classic dessert that looks fun and festive and packs lots of flavor.  This is also where you can shave some chocolate on top if you are missing your chocolate.  Yeah baby!  Less fat and calories but definitely a worthy dessert.

Making desserts that taste fantastic but have a healthy twist to them are not as hard as you think.  Adding your favorites, like a little chocolate to a light dessert is a great way to bring all the flavors you love into the dish without feeling like you have to give something up.  It is called having your cake… and eating it too!
